A GAYEGYPT.COM EXCLUSIVE - 21 JULY 05 - From our reporter on Hackney Road, London - the site of today's bus bombing. Well, to be absolutely honest, while I was there earlier ( just passing the well known gay pub the Joiners Arms at No 116 which lies about 100 metres from the incident ), I'm now actually typing this up round the corner in an internet caf in Bethnal Green Road.
A CLUE IN THE BUS NUMBERS ? - Could the seemingly random sequence of numbers 30 - 26 ( the numbers of the buses attacked on 7th and 21st July ) provide a clue which links the recent London attacks to Zarqawi ? In Iraq a recent U.S. amry leaflet, number 3026, dropped over Fallujah last November warned insurgents with this short but pointed message
"Where ever you fire your mortars from you are in range of our guns. Now you are subject to counter fire at our discretion.
"YOUR DAYS OF FIRING WITHOUT RETALIATION ARE OVER !"
It doesn't take a genious to see how a warped mind might delight in these phrases and use these numbers to determine what otherwise might be seen as an entirely random attack on two different buses. This would be Iraq's first "RETALIATION" against Britain. You can image a brute like Zarqawi reading leaflet 3026 almost as a challenge. He might also have been inadvertently influenced by some of the other leaflets aimed at insurgents which often contained deliberate black humour such as
"Sorry you were out when we popped by for a visit. But don’t worry. We’ll catch up with you and your friends real soon."
Unable to reek revenge on the surrounding Americans, perhaps Zarqawi planned his own much blacker humour against America's staunchest ally - Britain. We also know that events in Fallujah caused deep anger amongst Leeds' muslim community where three of the 7 July bombers came from. Last December a senior Iraqi doctor just back from the conflict spoke to students at Leeds university about the horrors of the Fallujah conflict.
"They won “hearts and minds” because they cut off the heads and took out the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people. How can I forget what has happened? I get nightmares, insomnia, I have lost my appetite as a result of post-traumatic stress. No one can forgive or forget."
( For a fuller account see the Report of the Socialist Worker - click here. )
His aim was entirely a worthy one - to make Fallujah's plight known as widely as possible and no one could blame the doctor in any way for any possible twisted logic of vengeance that anyone in Leeds may have derived from that bloody conflict in Iraq. I use the example of his talk merely to illustrate the genuine and deserved resentment at America's actions which erupted up in Leeds and indeed elsewhere.
But events in Fallujah might also have acted as a motivation and any insurgent from that city may have received a sympathetic hearing from a small minority of muslim extremists in Leeds.
This takes us back to those numbers and the leaflet. Although it's highly speculative it does seem a link that might be worth investigating even if it is probably a mere, if bizarre, coincidence.
What do you think ?

BUS EXPLOSION OCCURED LONG BEFORE 1.30PM
All of the newspapers I've seen and the BBC are claiming the detenator on the No 26 Bus to Hackney Wick went off at 1.30pm. However, as an eyewitness I can say that it can't have occured after 1.10pm and probably ocurred before 1.00pm.
I had to meet up with a friend not far from the Joiners Arms pub on Hackney Road at 1.30pm. I have never been less than five minutes early to any such rendez-vous in the last year. I set off from Bethnal Green Road at about 1.05pm and as I approached Hackney Road at about 1.15pm I could already see a helicopter flying over the spot where the incident had happened.
As I arrived at Hackney Road which must have been around 1.20pm there were already a number of police cars parked up around the number 55 bus which had been stopped about 100 metres behind the 26 bus.
