ADRERE AMELLAL

Tel Cairo: + 20 (0) 2 340 0052

Our Comments

17KM from the town centre this is a new 'ecofriendly' hotel which claims to have spectacular views over the lake and oasis but we haven't visited it. Voted by "Conde Nest Traveler" magazine as one of the best 100 hotels in the world late in 2000.

Other Verdicts

"The traditional architecture, organic food, lack of electricity and swimming pool created from a Roman spring make this a very special hotel," Eyewitness Egypt 2001.

"The rooms are simple but comfortable and stylish, decorated with local findings and lit by oil lamps, but don't worry there is electricity in the lobby and kitchens," Spiral Egypt.

"Destined to become one of the best places to stay in the country," Lonely Planet 1999.

TAGHAGHIEN ISLAND RESORT

Tel: Siwa: +20 (0)46 4600455

Or email info@taghaghien-island.com

Our Comments

Built on Taghaghien Island in the middle of Siwa's great salt lake - approximately 7km from the town. You stay in one of 30 bungalows. Prices start at 40 dollars per single room for tourists and 175LE for Egyptians. Although we haven't visited this hotel the prices seem quite reasonable based on the information we have. The hotel has a website - www.taghaghien-island.com

BUDGET HOTELS

ALEXANDER HOTEL

Number of rooms: 17

Tel: + 20 (0) 46 460 0512

Our Comments

Near the telephone office on a road just to the NW of the main square (few minutes walk only). Reputedly very clean.

Other Verdicts

"Clean rooms with fans and a roof terrace," Eyewitness Egypt 2001.

"Laundry, pleasant restaurant and a roof terrace," Rough Guide 2000.

"The spotless single/double rooms are EŁ12/25 [approx 3 dollars/6 dollars] with bath, not including breakfast," Lonely Planet 1999.

AROUS AL-WAHA

Number of rooms: 20

Tel No: + 20 (0) 46 460 2100

Our Comments

Near the tourist office it is a pleasant and clean hotel although the rooms are expensive for what you get. Please think though before financing a hotel whose profits go directly into the coffers of an undemocratic homophobic government. Better to chose one of the other hotels if possible.

Other Verdicts

"Government hotel at the entrance to town," Rough Guide 2000.

"An old government hotel recently renovated," Fodor's 1999.

"The rooms at this central hotel are clean and the staff friendly," Eyewitness Egypt 2001.

"Rather run down," Footprint Egypt Handbook 2000.

"Resembles a modern government building rather than a hotel," Lonely Planet 1999.

BADAWI HOTEL

Location: Take the road south from the main square. It is about about 1km along the road.

No phone.

"Only opens when everywhere else is full," Rough Guide 2000.

CLEOPATRA HOTEL

Tel: + 20 (0) 46 460 2148.

Our Comments

On the road south from the main square ( about a 5 minute walk). Moderately priced.

Other Verdicts

"The shared facilites are spotless....[but] mosquitoes ar a big problem due to a stagnant pond nearby," Rough Guide 2000.

"The more expensive chalets [have] ceiling fan and simple wooden furniture," Lonely Planet 1999.

NEW SIWA HOTEL

Just south of the Cleopatra Hotel and possibly the cheapest hotel in Egypt ( recently it had beds at 3LE or under ) but not without reason. Sorry we don't have their number.

"[The] scummiest place in Siwa," Lonely Planet 1999.

PALM TREES HOTEL

Tel: + 20 (0) 46 460 2304

Our Comments

Near the south east end of the main square this must be one of the cheapest hotels in Egypt with reasonably adequate rooms for the price. The gardens at the back where you can relax under the palms is a good place to meet other tourists - European or Egyptian.

Other Verdicts

"A budget favourite just off the main square," Eyewitness Egypt 2001.

"There's constant hot water and the bathrooms are clean," Lonely Planet 1999.

"A lovely palm garden out back where you can enjoy meals and table tennis," Rough Guide 2000.

"Recommended," Footprint Egypt Handbook 2000.

YOUSEF HOTEL

Tel: + 20 (0) 46 460 2162

Our Comments

Right in the middle of the town and again incredibly cheap -

Other Verdicts

"Has a variety of clean rooms," Rough Guide 2000.

"Everything is clean, the beds are comfortable, and the showers are steaming with hot water," Lonely Planet 1999.
