By the corniche right in the middle of downtown Alex. "This hotel was the setting of Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet," Eyewitness Egypt 2001. "The glamour has long gone, but the charm of the place and views over the bay still pull romantics," Insight Guide 2000. "There's.....a very good Chinese restaurant on the roof," Lonely Planet 1999. "There is a sense of disarray among the staff, with supposedly full-time facilities rendered inaccessible because the employee with the key might be eating lunch," Fodor's 1999. The back of the hotel overlooks Midan Saad Zaghloul and the harbour. [ highly recommended ] Other Verdicts "This period hotel has charming rooms with high ceilings and lots of atmosphere," Essential Egypt 2000. "Worth staying for the wonderful Art Deco and Art Nouveau decor," Footprint Egypt Handbook 2000. "Recently renovated, this elegant building was where the poet Constantine Cavafy supposedly worked," Eyewitness Egypt 2001. "Rooms are cosy with soft beds and clean baths," Rough Guide 2000 "The lobby is horribly overdone but some of the rooms are beautiful," Lonely Planet 1999. "Badly run and lacking in many of the facilities you'd expect of a top-end hotel," Lonely Planet 1999. "This 1920s-style hotel on the Corniche has seen its charm fade over the years," Fodor's 1999. THREE STAR HOTELS AGAMY PALACE Location: Al Bittash Beach, El Agami. Number of rooms: 502 Tel: 03 433 0230 Fax: 03 430 9364. SAN GIOVANNI Address: 205 Sharia El Geish, Stanley. Approximately mid way between Montazah and Downtown though beware in heavy traffic getting to either can take some time ! Number of rooms: 30 Tel: 03 546 7774 or 03 546 7775 Fax: 03 546 4408 Our Comments: Probably Alexandiria's best three star hotel. Other Verdicts "Superb setting, jutting out over the sea at Stanley Bay, and you can hear the waves crashing as you fall asleep," Lonely Planet 1999. SEMIRAMIS HOTEL Location: on the corniche just two minutes walk from Midan Saad Zaghloul in downtown Alex. Tel: 03 482 6837 Our Comments How did it get its' three stars ? Number of rooms: 38 Number of restaurants: 1 Tel 03 484 7011 or 03 482 7011 "Very clean, spacious rooms, sea or garden view," Rough Guide 2000. "rather faded Greek-run downtown hotel," Footprint Egypt Handbook 2000. "If you've read Mahfouz, then the Ailema is as close as you'll get to the pension Miramar in the book of the same name," Lonely Planet 1999. "The hotel is well maintained with polished wood floors and very clean bathrooms," Eyewitness Egypt 2001. "Old style, adequate rooms....overlooking Ramlah Square," Insight Guide 2000. BUDGET HOTELS EITHER UNRATED OR RATING UNKNOWN All the hotels listed below are located in downtown Alex within five minutes walk of Midan Saad Zaghloul and about a 15 minute walk or 5 minute taxi ride from the station. ACROPOLE HOTEL Location: 4th Floor, 1 Gamal ad-Din Yassin, overlooking Midan Saad Zaghloul. Tel: 03 480 5980 Our Comments: Its one of the cheapest hotels in Alex (but not without reason) and if you get a room overlooking the square you can see if there is anyone sitting in the gardens who you might want to talk to. CRILLON HOTEL Location: 4th Floor, 5 Sharia Adib Ishq in downtown Alex. Tel: 03 480 0330. HYDE PARK HOTEL Address: 6th Floor, 21 Amin Fikry St., Ramla Station. Right in the middle of downtown Alex and just one floor below the Ailema Hotel (see above). Tel: 03 483 5666 "Definitely inferior to the [ one star ] Ailema," Rough Guide 2000. "It's similar in character to the Ailema on the floor above, but it's not as well kept or clean," Lonely Planet 1999. NEW HOTEL WELCOME HOUSE Address: 8 Sharia Gamal ad-Din Yassin. Tel: 03 480 6402 Our Comments: Possibly the cheapest hotel in downtown Alex. SEASTAR HOTEL Address: 24 Amin Fikry, Ramla Station. Tel: 03 483 1787 or 03 480 5343 Fax: 03 483 2388 Our Comments: Not a lot to recommend it besides its central location. Other Verdicts: "Small but comfortable rooms with balconies that look out on the square Venetian-style apartment buildings near Raml station," Fodor's 1999. Triomphe Hotel, 5th Floor, 2 Gamal ad-Din Yassin. Next too Acropole Hotel (see above) and somewhat similar. Tel: 03 480 7585 UNION HOTEL Location: 5th Floor, 164 Sharia 26th. Located a few minutes walk from the Cecil close to all the attractions of downtown Alex. Tel: 03 480 7312 Fax: 03 480 7350 Our Comments: Usually one of the cleanest budget hotels and some rooms have great harbour views.Recommended. "Housed in an Art Deco building, three blocks from Midan Saad Zaghloul, this popular hotel is excellent value," Eyewitness Egypt 2001. "Up to the standard of many mid-range hotels," Lonely Planet 1999. "Delightful lounge for an afternoon drink, facing the sea," Insight Guide 2000.
